History
The New Antioch Baptist Church was organized on February 22, 1952, under the leadership of Rev. James Z. Williams and thirteen members. When organized the church was first given the name “New Pilgrim Baptist Church” but the name was soon changed to its present name by Deaconess Ruth Tanner.
New Antioch Baptist Church's first location was at Ann and Jefferson Streets. Due to its rapid growth, it was necessary to seek larger quarters for worship and the church moved to 1022 Harford Avenue. In 1957, the late Rev. Nathan Fulton became the pastor. The membership continued to increase as the missionary program was launched, and the church became a member of the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Maryland. The church then moved to the corner of Eden and Hoffman Streets in October 1959.
In June of 1961, the church was completely gutted by fire. The members with Rev. W. S. Chambers, acting as a pastor, found refuge with the Second Baptist Church at Guilford and Lanvale Streets where the late Rev. Julius Price was pastor. On the first Sunday of November 1961, the membership was blessed to return to the newly renovated church building at Eden and Hoffman Streets. The membership continued to grow rapidly under the pastorship of Rev. Chambers, and during the next decade, the church was blessed to purchase an Educational Center.
After serving as acting pastor for an extended period, on December 15, 1988, the church membership voted to extend the pastorship to Rev. Orlando A. Wilson. Installation Services were held from May 22 through May 28, 1989, and Pastor Wilson was installed on Sunday, May 28. As the Pastor of New Antioch Church, Dr. Wilson, through the divine intervention of God, continued to promote new vision in the church and the community, building, and rebuilding, in the name of Jesus. By God’s grace and under the leadership of Pastor Wilson, New Antioch moved to its current location, 2401 Saint Paul Street in November 1992.
